I knew Walter Savitch through his Absolute Java book when I took a programming class at university (I have a very basic background in Java). I was really impressed with his style and clear explanation.I decided lately to learn C++ but wasn't sure what book I should choose. Gladly, I came across this book which I borrowed from a friend. I wasn't disappointed at all. It is the best book ever to teach C++ to beginners. It is highly recommended that you have a minimal idea on what programming is, if you don't, you still can use this book as an introductory for C++ and programming in general.I gave this book 5 starts because: 1. the explanation is super clear. 2. it walks you through programming step by step. 3. it anticipate the problems you might face such as (I typed the code exactly as it written in the book but it doesn't work! the answer is you might have an older compiler and to fix this issue you should ....etc) 4. it contains a summary at the end of each chapter 5. it has self-test questions 6. it has programming project exercises 7. the answer to the self-tests are provided at the end of each chapter.As a result, I have purchased my own copy! I highly recommend this book!

I ate into this book the summer before taking a class on the c++ language. I have 100% in the class. I adore the writing style of this book for the most part. The quotes are kind of silly but it is not worth losing a star. I can spend well over ten hours a day experimenting with what I learned from this book. :)Next on my list is Absolute Java and then maybe some graph theory books. This mathematician helped give me confidence that computer science is a really deep, powerful, and cool subject.

I found the 3rd edition (2008) of Savitch's book, which addressed C++98, to be very helpful. Since then, the C++11 standard came out, and to bring myself up to speed, I got this 6th edition (2016). A lot of things were changed/added to the language between C++98 and C++11, so I expected to see a substantial amount of new material in the 6th edition.I was disappointed. There is only about 4 percent of new material on C++11 in the first 19 chapters (which covers the first 922 pages). Chapter 20 is supposed to be the last chapter, but actually it's completely missing from the text (see below). Only four C++11 features are included in any depth, as a new appendix, which adds 16 pages on C++11 -- roughly 4 pages per topic. Not enough, IMHO.But what I really found annoying was that chapter 20 ("Patterns and UML"), a very important chapter, was moved in its entirety to an online version for the 6th edition (can't say if this is true for editions 4 through 5). And you need a special code to access chapter 20, which is non-transferrable. Since I bought my book used, I was SOL (no access, unless I want to purchase a new code for $24!).Now, there is plenty of great stuff here for someone who is learning C++. But if, like me, you were considering this edition as an upgrade to learn C++11, all I can say is, unless you only need a cursory understanding, don't bother. Find a more comprehensive title on the topic.Don't buy this edition. Save your $$ and buy an earlier edition that includes chapter 20 (even the 3rd would cover nearly everything that later editions do), and use other resources to pick up C++11 skills.

This book has excellent examples and practice problems. If you diligently do all of the practice programs at the end of each chapter, then you will have an excellent understanding of C++.

Great book required for my Systems Programing Class at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Wish it was not so expensive.

I have been developing software for nearly 25 years. I have written programs for everything from mainframes to mobile devices utilizing more than a dozen different programming languages. Because of this, I frequently buy/work through books and course to refresh or learn new skills. I typically always get beginner books especially when approaching programming languages or suites I have used before. I do this because regardless of experience or title, in I.T. there is always something new you can learn. That is why I have to wholeheartedly recommend this book. Don’t be discouraged by the fact that it is for 2012. You will learn some valuable skills and it is highly accessible. I have recommended this book to a couple of developers on my staff that are faced without having to learn some .Net skills for a future project. While I have been using .Net since version 1.0, while going through the book I learned a few new things also.Pros:Step by step lessons with beginning code providedWonderful asides that explain concepts and decisions by Microsoft a little deeper, but are completely separate from the exercises, allow the reader to easily skip them if desired.Excellent end of section exercises that build on what was covered along with their solutions.Introduces current technologies like Entity Framework and LINQ, through a steady progression so that they are easily understood.Provides a solid introduction to C# while learning ASP.NETEnds with a “complete” application to be developed using the skills introduced in book.Cons:May not have enough “meat” for some. There are no long drawn out discussions of what is introduced.End book application may leave some desiring more. (They have an expert book that I will also review once I have time to go through it through it )I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in learning ASP.NET. Note: the book uses Visual Studio Web Express 2012 for development. Please be aware that this can still be downloaded from Microsoft. Visual Studio 2013 can also be used and follows the book closely as well.

This book is EXCELLENT! This methodology is easy to follow, amazingly clear, and the care and time taken in laying out the screenshots, being specific in the instructions, editing the content to avoid repetition, they all make for a clear fast method to learn ASP.NET, C# and Visual Studio 2012 all at the same time.My background is in computer science, but it's been 14 years since I worked in C++, and my last web experience was with struts 10 years ago.. Never took a C# class, or worked with Visual Studio or .NET. This book was perfect, because the parts on C# all awoke the C++ memories in my head, and the explanations on how the aspx and aspx.cs files worked together was very clear.I had 2 tasks come up at work at the same time, where C#, Visual Studios and .NET were requirements. Not knowing any of those, I was in a bit of a tight spot, but this book saved my bacon. I'm starting to create the first of the applications for work now, and it would not have been possible without this book.And if that wasn't enough, I had a problem with one of the exercises in the next book, Learn ASP.NET 4.5, C# and Visual Studio 2012 Expert Skills with The Smart Method: Courseware tutorial for self-instruction to expert level, and put in a question on the website for help. I got a response back well within the 48 hours (I think only 3 hours later), and the response solved the issue I had been having. (It was my issue, not that of the material).

I purchased this book because I wanted to learn how to create ASP.NET (web) applications. I've been doing Windows forms in .NET for about 10 years now but using a language that can be considered a dialect of C# (if interested, ASNA Visual RPG for .NET). While I had a fairly good handle on object oriented programming, there were constructs that I never really understood. Simon's book and teaching method have not only given be a good start on ASP.NET programming but also filled in the blanks in my knowledge of C#. I now have a much better understanding (as a grizzly old IBM programmer) of what constructors do and how to best employ custom classes. What you will see on the back cover of this book ("Why this book is different") is totally accurate. I only wish other books on IT subjects were written in the same style as Simon Smart has used. I f you want to learn C# and ASP.NET, this is an excellent (and possibly the only way) to start.

After Adobe decided to drop database support for Dreamweaver, I went looking for a replacement tool set to build interactive, database driven web sites. I decided it was time to jump into ASP.NET as my new tool and this book has been a huge help with the rather steep learning curve. The book includes a comprehensive review of ASP.NET 4.5 and Visual Studio 2012. I used Visual Studio 2013 Express for the Web which is a free download from Microsoft. All of the examples worked just as expected except for the chapter on site security. Microsoft dropped a very nice tool for managing site security, between VS 2012 and VS 2013 so I wasn't able to complete those examples in the book. There were a few minor differences between what the book told me to use and what I found in VS 2013 but those differences were minor and easy to overcome. I am presently working through the follow-on version of this book which is a set of "expert" skills. So far, that book appears every bit as useful as this one. This wasn't the first book on C# and Visual Studio that I've completed, but it is the first that I was able to work through all the way to the end. I highly recommend this book if you wish to learn about ASP.NET and Visual Studio... I consider it a vital stop on my way to mastering ASP.NET.
